Expected kit sizes are 25 items for PPE and 20 items for rigging. I’m fairly flexible on kit sizes, that said If you have 55 items in your kit then obviously its going to cost more than having 25 items (Just like tree surgery, time is money)

-

Thorough examination of a quarantined item £10 per item at my home in Lewes. If I have to come to you then I will have to charge all travel costs and a minimum of £60*
I work most days however weekends are popular and can get booked up well in advance.
You can come to my house in Lewes (BN7) and Ill Examine the kits while you wait or you can drop the kits off and come back to pick them up a bit later. I’m also happy to come to you to do the examinations however all travel costs associated with your examination are charged. If I'm driving then its 45p per mile. Transport charges such as train, TFL, ULEZ, tolls and parking are also charged. I'll try to pair up examinations away from Lewes to save people money.
Thorough examinations are every 6 months for PPE and 12 months for rigging however exceptional circumstances may shorten the frequency of the thorough examination such as an item being overloaded or being involved in an incident.
Some manufacturers such as Stein require a 6 monthly thorough examination on their new lowering devices.
Please present your kit clean, dry and in a fit state to pass the thorough examination. Take everything apart to individual items and do some maintenance. Lubricate karabiners, make sure that ropes and prusiks are tagged and replace worn harness bridges etc.
Examine your kit and quarantine any items that you suspect will fail a LOLER thorough examination.
Remove any non-LOLER items from your bag such as gloves, spikes, handsaws, sandwich rappers, woodchip etc.
If I'm seeing your kit for the first time then please send me your previous LOLER reports if you have any, receipts are also very handy to clarify dates of purchase and therefore first use.
Traceability of items is very important for your LOLER thorough examination. The 2019 recall from Teufelberger regarding some of their ropes (Slaices - splice/sewn ends) highlights the importance of being able to identify the rope by its manufacture date and batch and take them out of service. This goes across the board for equipment.
Prusik loops which are self-tied or splices that you have made yourself are unable to pass a LOLER thorough examination as safe to use.
It’s either PPE or Rigging, it can’t be both.
Each kit bag should be marked with either a kit name, number or purpose. (Gavin's kit or safety kit etc.)
